Yorktown waterfront to be bustling with activity this spring

Spring is here and with the advent of warmer weather, Yorktown will come alive with living history demonstrations, award-winning farmers’ markets, and pirates looking for treasure.

Yorktown Market Days kicks off its regular season of weekly farmers’ markets on Saturday. The Saturday showcase of seasonal produce, fresh seafood, meats, breads, handmade soaps and much more runs from 8 a.m. to noon through the end of October (with the exception of May 7 and Oct. 1). There are a number of theme days, beginning this week with the Go Green Market in recognition of Earth Day.

Other upcoming special themed markets include Sisters Cities French Market on April 16 and the Pirate Invasion Market on April 23. April 16 is also York County History Day, with activities going on throughout town, including Civil War living history, cannon firings and live music. Events are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with special activities occurring at the Watermen’s Museum, York Hall, Riverwalk Landing, and various buildings along Main Street.

The Watermen’s Museum Chili Cook-Off, and its biggest annual fundraiser, kicks off from noon to 3 p.m. Guests can sample competing chefs’ chili recipes and vote for the People’s Choice Award. Additional chili may be purchased, if available. Call 757-887-2641 for competition rules, entry forms, and to purchase tickets.

The Pirate Invasion Weekend (April 23-25) will include a pirate encampment, live blacksmith demonstrations, sing along with sea shanties and cannon demonstrations.
