The YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas recognized its 2025 Mathews Family YMCA Volunteers of the Year and Teen Volunteer of the Year during a Community Impact Dinner held on April 16 at the Marriott at City Center in Newport News. The dinner celebrated individuals whose service has made a lasting impact across the region.
This year’s Mathews volunteer honor was awarded to Mathews Family YMCA volunteers Mary Chapman, Beth Johnson, Pat Lipinski, Meredith MacDougall, Susan Murdoch and Lynne White, who played a key role in planning, fundraising, and designing the new Mathews Family YMCA Preschool, which opened in August 2025.
Gavin Dustin was named Mathews’ 2025 Teen Volunteer of the Year for organizing a successful 5K run to benefit the Mathews Family YMCA Youth Soccer program. Dustin collaborated with the YMCA and the Mathews Outdoor Club, coordinating community partners to bring the event to life and support youth sports locally.
