WWI centennial ceremony to be held at library

Mathews Memorial Library will hold a special ceremony at noon today to commemorate the men of Mathews who died in World War I. April 6, 2017 marks the centennial of America officially entering the war.

Members of the American Legion, the Retired Officers of Mathews County Association, and the library will all participate in this observance.

Speakers will include Jack White, chairman of the Mathews County Board of Supervisors, Capt. William Story (USN-ret.), the Mathews Memorial Library Board of Trustees, and the Rev. Gary J. Barker, rector of Kingston Parish Church.

World War I holds a special significance for Mathews Memorial Library. The library was dedicated on Nov. 11, 1937 as a memorial to the men of Mathews who gave their lives while serving in that conflict.
