Wrike to speak on Gwynn’s Island during the Revolution on Aug. 20

Local author and historian Peter Wrike will speak about his book, “The Governor’s Island,” a history of Gwynn’s Island during the American Revolution, next Thursday, Aug. 20, at the Mathews Museum. The talk will begin at 7 p.m. The museum is located at 200 Main Street in Mathews. The book focuses on Lord Dunmore and his activities during his travels from Norfolk to his arrival, and expulsion, from Gwynn’s Island in 1776. The book contains maps of the area, American and British fortifications, illustrations of ships, battle diagrams, and appendices. Wrike holds an undergraduate degree in history from the University of Maryland, and a master’s in history from Old Dominion University. He is an adjunct history professor at ODU. Light refreshments will be served, and a book signing will follow....
