Just three months removed from being named Mr. Virginia, local bodybuilder D’Shawn Wright traveled to the National Physique Committee’s Universe Bodybuilding competition held July 6 in Teaneck, New Jersey. Though he would come up just short of being named Mr. Universe, Wright did place second in the Men’s Open heavyweight category.

“The next level is a pro athlete,” Wright said, “and we were a few points away from that in both categories … We get it for sure next time.”

The competition featured over 900 athletes, male and female, across numerous categories. Wright’s finishing second places him among rarified company as one of the top amateur bodybuilders in the nation.
