Work to begin soon on Put-In Creek kayak launch

After several years of planning and working with the National Park Service on grant funding, Mathews County is finally ready to build a kayak and canoe launch on Put-In Creek near the court green.

Mathews Planning and Zoning Director John Shaw said the project will involve demolishing several small concrete pads at the former site of the sewage treatment facility on Brickbat Road and building 1,000 square feet of boardwalk with an L-head extending out from the Put-In Creek shoreline to the channel in the creek.  A wheelchair accessible launch will be installed at the end.

The large concrete pad that used to support one of the tanks at the site will be left in place for now, said Shaw, because future plans call for a gazebo or other covered structure at the park that current funding doesn’t pay for.

In addition to the boardwalk and kayak launch, the park service grant includes some landscaping of the site.
