Work continues on Coleman Bridge Sunday

Multiple openings are scheduled at the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge Sunday morning to allow crews to perform maintenance operations.

Motorists traveling both northbound and southbound over the bridge, which carries Route 17 over the York River between Gloucester Point and Yorktown, should expect traffic stops of up to 30 minutes as the spans are opened, said Brooke Grow, a spokesman for the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The openings will be intermittent between 7-11 a.m., Grow said. However, the bridge will not open for large ships to pass through from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday as work will continue under the span.

Crews will be performing work that includes changing oil in the motors, in addition to shimming and greasing bridge functions, Grow said.

A similar series of openings was held last Sunday to perform other routine maintenance, with no problems reported, Grow said.
