Work continues at Sinclair Recreation Area

Some improvements have been made in recent months—and others are in the works—at the Captain Sinclair Recreation Area at Naxera, Lewis Lawrence said.

Lawrence is executive director of the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission, which provides staff for the Middle Peninsula Chesapeake Bay Public Access Authority that owns the Captain Sinclair and a number of other donated properties with water access in the region. Lawrence reported on the Naxera project during a meeting Friday at the MPPDC boardroom in Saluda.

A pier has been installed at the site so that canoes and kayaks can be launched, Lawence said, and butterfly and rain gardens have been planted nearby. Plans are to install a living shoreline near the property’s estate house within the next several months. Rock will be placed about 20-30 feet out from the Severn River shoreline, he said, and then sand and grasses will be placed from the rocks back toward the shore.
