A funeral for William James “Jim” Thornton, 81, of Portsmouth, was held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 8 in Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. He died June 3, 2015.

Mr. Thornton was the son of the late Philip T. Thornton and Annie Robins Thornton, and was a native of Gloucester County.

He served in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956. As a local businessman, he had owned restaurants and auto sales companies. He currently was the owner and operator of a company that provided lights, sound and music for special events locally, and to other localities throughout the region.

Mr. Thornton is survived by a cousin, Jean H. Shackelford of Portsmouth.

Interment followed in the Thornton Family Cemetery, Gloucester Point. Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of your choice.
