William Greene “Bill” Long, 76, of Mathews, Virginia, passed away on October 5, 2026. He was born on June 19, 1950, in Monroe, North Carolina, where he was raised by his father, Ed Long, and his cherished mother, Carrilee “Duck” Long, alongside his older sister, Elaine, and his younger sister, Anne.
After graduating from Catawba College, Bill was employed by Cannon Mills in New York City. He later returned to North Carolina and settled in Charlotte, where he started his own woodworking business, a path that eventually led him to a career selling fasteners. It was during his time in Charlotte that he met his beautiful wife, Kristina. They were married on September 18, 1982 and shared 44 years together. In 1988, Bill and Kris moved with their three young daughters to Davidson, North Carolina. While the girls were growing up, the family enjoyed biking trips and walks around the Davidson College campus, and they made an annual trip to Holden Beach, North Carolina. In 1999, they relocated to Mathews County, Virginia, in search of a slower-paced way of life.
As a young man, Bill had a great love of sailing, and he never lost his love of the outdoors. He had a gift for fixing up houses and enjoyed working outside and tinkering in his shop, where he was always tackling a small woodworking project. He took great pride in his home and property, most recently renovating his deck and garden to better suit his seven rambunctious grandchildren and his dog, Rosie. Bill loved the Lord, and God was a meaningful and cherished part of his life and the foundation on which he built it. He especially enjoyed singing in the church choir. His beloved wife, Kristina, was of the utmost importance to him, and his family was his greatest pride and joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Edward and Carrilee, and his sister Elaine.
Bill is survived by his wife, Kristina Kay Moyer Long; his daughters, Lindsey Parker (David) and her children, Luke, Stella, and Isla; Chandler Long (Will) and her children, Campbell and Quinn Rogers; Meredith Sherman (Greg) and her children, William and Paige, and his sister, Anne Long.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at Salem Church in Diggs, Virginia. A luncheon will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Salem Church, Gwynn’s Island Church of the Nazarene, or the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad.
