WILLIAM EDWARD THORNTON

William Edward Thornton, 65, of Bena, died June 26, 2018 at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

He was born March 25, 1953 to Julian and Virginia Saunders Thornton. Willie graduated from Virginia Tech (VPI), was a member of the originating Marching Virginians, and was an avid Hokie fan. He worked in the business field after college and spent the past 20 years as a special education teacher in Gloucester and York County Public Schools. His students were very important to him and he enjoyed mentoring them and giving guidance. 

He loved music, sang with Tri-County Express, and was involved with the Court House Players. Willie also enjoyed playing golf, his Men’s Group meetings, going to his daughter’s field hockey games, and time on the water with friends. His family was his passion and he will be missed so much.

He was preceded in death by his father, Julian Thornton.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy Thornton; daughter, Abigail Thornton; mother, Virginia Thornton; mother-in-law, Dottie Hardy; cousin, Ginny (Thornton) Snowden and husband Roy Snowden, and his faithful companions, Molly and Brodie.

The family received friends Monday, July 2 from 5:30-6:30 p.m., followed by a service at 6:30 at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. The Rev. Aaron West conducted the service.
