WILLIAM DEW CARLTON

William Dew Carlton of Gloucester, passed away March 5, 2018. 

Bill was born Nov. 19, 1934 to Wellie Dew Carlton and Sue Pearl Ball Carlton at Little Plymouth, King and Queen County. He grew up on the family farm where he learned the farming business from his parents. He was active in the 4-H Club and won awards for showing his animals at local fairs and the Virginia State Fair.

As a youth, Bill joined Olivet Baptist Church. He attended and graduated from Pleasant Hill High School in 1954. During his high school years, he was a valued member of the football, basketball, and baseball teams. Bill first worked in construction in both Maryland and Virginia. He was later employed by the Chesapeake Corporation forestry division before becoming self-employed as a farmer.

Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, water skiing, and operating heavy equipment whenever possible. He dearly loved Duke basketball, the Yankees, and William and Mary athletics. He was a longtime member of the William and Mary Athletic Education Foundation.  

Bill was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Wellie Burnell Carlton, Nettie Carlton Neisz, Robert Shelton Carlton, Lillian Carlton Boyce, Thelma Arlene Carlton, Lois Carlton Franklin, and Ruby Carlton Caldwell. 

Bill is survived by his wife, Pat Carlton; his two daughters, Katherine Haggerty (Ron), and Susan Fleet (John); grandchildren, Hunter Beamer, Will Leggett, Josh Leggett and Alexandra Haggerty. He is also survived by C. Burke King (Gay), Nancy Smith (Sean), and Sally Laws (Hank); as well as Caroline King, Taylor King, Nicholas Smith, Ann Marie Smith, and Ella Laws. 

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 9 at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th Street, West Point, with burial following in Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery, 25338 The Trail, Mattaponi, Va. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Thursday, also at the funeral home.
