WILLIAM CURTIS ‘JUNE’ SMITH JR.

William Curtis “June” Smith Jr., 66, of Hayes, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, April 7, 2016.

June was a Gloucester native, graduated from Gloucester High School in 1967 and attended vocational school. He served in the Air National Guard for 23 years, and retired from Newport News Shipbuilding after 41 years in 2014.

He was a member of Union Baptist Church, as well as being a member of the Abingdon Ruritan Club and the Styling Stangs Mustang Club. June’s special interests and hobbies included antique cars of which he had a collection, and antique shopping for furniture.

June was a lover of cats; he was kind and compassionate to everyone. It was the simple things around him in life that he never took for granted and was always thankful for what he had. He was a man of faith, believing in the power of Christ and the beauty and peace that would await him after his passing. June was a loving husband, son, brother and uncle who will be dearly missed.

He was preceded in death by his father, William C. Smith Sr.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 41 years, Joann N. Smith; his beloved mother, Evelyn “Cookie” Smith; brother, Ronnie L. Smith; niece, Sarah Smith; nephews, David and Daniel Smith; sister-in-law, Kathleen Hardy and husband Tom; brother-in-law, William Nuttall and wife Linda; aunts, Beulah Colon, Harriett Kellum and Carol Smith; uncles, Raymond Kellum and wife Dorothy, Steve Kellum and wife Dale, and Harold Smith, and a host of other loving family and friends.

A funeral service conducted by the Rev. Richard Whiteheart was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at Union Baptist Church, 9254 Guinea Road, Hayes. Interment followed in Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery. The family received friends Monday, April 11, 2016, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.

The family extends a heartfelt thanks to the Riverside Walter Reed Hospice staff and to Peninsula Cancer Institute of Williamsburg, Dr. John Miller and staff.
