To close out a month of celebrations of the nation’s 250th anniversary, Gloucester County on Saturday will commemorate the time in July 1776, when word of the Declaration of Independence reached Gloucester and its citizens.The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in the Gloucester Court Circle, in front of the colonial courthouse. Robert Kelly, chairman of the Gloucester VA250 committee, said, “We are using John Page’s letter to Thomas Jefferson of July 20, 1776, as inspiration for the program.” Page, of Rosewell in Gloucester, and Jefferson, were 1763 classmates at the College of William and Mary. In 1776 he was acting governor of Virginia. In this letter, Page addresses, “My Dear Jefferson,” and starts by discussing the effort to find an engraver and mentions the result of the July 9 action at Gwynn’s Island, which drove the last royal governor from Virginia: “Dunmores Fleet was at the Mouth of Potowmack when I heard last from it.
