Ron James of Dutton took the Native American mortar and pestle found on family property for ID at What’s It Night, held Aug. 23 at the Mathews Historical Museum. No date could be assigned, a release said. James and others took artifacts for evaluation and identification provided by the Fairfield Foundation. Thane Harpole, foundation co-director, provided an overview of the area’s archaeology dating to prehistoric times, and discussed digs at Werowocomoco, Place of the King, where Powhatan reigned in the early 1600s.
