Mathews Land Conservancy is hosting its 14th Annual Wharf to Wharf Swim at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, at Williams Wharf Landing in Mathews. This open water swim will be approximately one mile across the East River from Williams Wharf to historic Hicks Wharf and back.
Registration and check-in begins at noon. Participants are asked to have masks on hand for registration and the awards ceremony. All ages and abilities are welcome and swim aids are permitted. Forms can be found online at mathewslandconservancy.org/events.
Swimmers should raise at least $100 in tax-deductible sponsorship funds, which will benefit the projects and facilities at Williams Wharf. Prizes will be awarded to top fundraisers.
Swimmers will start in waves: 1st Wave for Non-Assisted Swimmers (medals will be awarded), 2nd Wave for Assisted Swimmers (swim aids). Depending on the number of registrants, waves will be added for proper safe distancing. Times will be recorded for all by the Virginia Tidewater Trailrunners.
Conditions for the swim are usually ideal with air and water temperatures in the 70s and minimal jellyfish. Swim caps will be provided for the participants and must be worn during the event.
Spectators and participants can enjoy live music at the Riverfront Pavilion and food by Creekside Catering and the Central Village Homemakers. Each attendee is responsible for being aware of their proximity to others and do their part to maintain social distancing guidelines, a release stated.
Sponsorships for swimmers can be made online at mathewslandconservancy.org or by mail to P.O. Box 306, Mathews, Va. 23109. Contact Lynda Smith Greve at lsmithgreve@gmail.com for more information.
