Wharf to Wharf Swim set for Sept. 16

Sunday, Sept. 16 has been set as the date for the 12th annual L. Wayne Hudgins Wharf to Wharf Swim, held at Williams Wharf Landing, Mathews. Starting time is 1 p.m.

The 1,400-meter out-and-back course takes swimmers across the East River from Williams Wharf, to Hicks Wharf, and back. The purpose is to raise funds for the under-construction Owens Center at Williams Wharf. When completed, this structure will be a maritime education and rowing center.

Swimmers commit to raising at least $100 in tax deductible contributions, a notice said. The swim is open to swimmers of all ages and abilities (sent off in two waves), and the event is open to spectators, with music and refreshments to add to the atmosphere.

Registration and sponsorship forms can be found at mathewslandconservancy.org. Potential swimmers may also call 804-725-9685 for more information. ...
