Wharf to Wharf Swim returns Sunday

Dozens of swimmers will travel almost a mile in the East River on Sunday in a fundraiser for the Mathews Land Conservancy.

The ninth annual L. Wayne Hudgins Memorial Wharf to Wharf Swim, named for a longtime supporter of the conservancy, will begin at 1 p.m. Swimmers will depart Williams Wharf, cross the river to Hicks Wharf, and return. It’s not a race, and swim aids are permitted. The distance is 1,400 meters, nearly one mile.

The only requirement is that each swimmer raise $100 to take part. Funds are designated toward the new boathouse under construction at Williams Wharf, which is designed to make the wharf “Tidewater’s premier rowing venue,” said veteran swimmer Mimi Ulsaker.

Spectators are welcome at the swim, Ulsaker said, and refreshments will be on sale. ...
