Wetlands board to consider wharf project at Jan. 8 meeting

The Mathews County Wetlands Board will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, on an application for a permit for extensive construction that will impact wetlands at Williams Wharf Landing. The meeting will be held in the historic courtroom on Court Street.

The Mathews Land Conservancy is asking the board to grant it permission to build a structure out from the northern shoreline and over top of 5,361.25 square feet of vegetated and non-vegetated wetlands. The proposed building would have a fixed dock extending from beneath it that would cover 1,580.56 square feet of vegetated wetlands and would connect to two parallel 80-foot by 16-foot floating piers.

Four existing piers would be removed to allow for construction—two on the northern shoreline and two that are west of them. The proposal includes replacing the two westward piers with a larger 62-foot pier with a 100-foot by 14-foot T-head.
