WENDALL LEWIS JOHNSTON JR.

Wendall Lewis Johnston Jr., 74, of Gloucester, passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2017, at his home.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Gloucester County. He was a member of Bellamy United Methodist Church, and an avid hunter and golfer.

He retired from Gloucester High School in 1996 where he was the Building Trades teacher after 18 years of services. After serving four years in the U.S. Navy, he worked with his father and his brother building homes in Gloucester. He was a member of the Gloucester High School Class of 1962. He was inducted into the Gloucester High School Hall of Fame in 2010.

He gave his time to the youth of Gloucester as a baseball and softball coach with the Gloucester Youth League; he was coach and assisted for the football, baseball and track programs at the High School. Wendall was also an honorary member of Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wendall L. Johnston Sr. and Dorothy Horsley Johnston, and is survived by his wife of 52½ years, Judy S. Johnston; his sons, Wendall Lewis Johnston III and his wife Audra, Rodney Lewis Johnston and his wife Connie, Spencer Lewis Johnston and his wife Stephanie, and Anthony Lewis Johnston and his wife Stephanie; sister, Patricia J. Hogge and her husband John William; brother, William Van Johnston and his wife Kyle; grandchildren, Brittany, Matthew, Taylor, Cole, Tori, Lindsay, Trevor, and Madison.

The family received friends at the funeral home on Sunday, July 16, 2017, from 6-7:30 p.m. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 17, 2017, at Bellamy United Methodist Church. Burial was at Bellamy Memorial Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Gloucester Fire and Rescue.
