Wednesday morning fire at campground destroys building

Firefighters were called to the Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resort at Glass Wednesday morning for a report of a storage shed on fire.

According to Robert Parlett, spokesperson for the Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, Inc., someone leaving the campground for work just after 5:30 a.m. called the owner after seeing smoke coming from the eaves of the roof on the building.

When firefighters arrived, Parlett said there was heavy smoke coming from the 20’x50’ metal storage building. He said the fire was confined to that building and it did not spread. However, he said at one point during the attack on the fire, the building’s roof began to collapse. “So, that’s when we took our people out of the building,” he said.

No injuries were reported, he said, but the building was a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
