Ways that you can help homeless pets in need

Since its founding in 1912, Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society has strived to protect animals. With the mission to be a beacon in animal adoption, welfare, and advocacy, GMHS continues to provide life-saving services to pets in need from the Middle Peninsula to the Northern Neck and beyond.

Compared to last year, the number of pets cared for by GMHS has more than doubled. With increased demand for services comes even more opportunities to partner with GMHS to save more lives.

You can give more pets lives full of love and comfort by adopting a homeless pet. GMHS has dogs, cats and small animals waiting to make their heart connection. If you are considering adoption, submit an adoption questionnaire prior to your visit to our shelter at gmhumanesociety.org/adoption-process. Your responses will help the adoption team learn more about the type of pet you would like to welcome into your heart and home. Your veterinarian will be contacted for previous records and/or landlord for permission, and an appointment will be scheduled for you to make a heart connection.

If you do not see the pet you are looking for available on our website, do not fret. Just fill out a questionnaire, and the adoption team will provide a personalized recommendation.

You can become a GMHS volunteer. We are looking to grow our volunteer ranks and would love to get you in the best role for you. We are in need of transport associates, canine/feline wellness attendants, and dog walkers for the Gloucester County Animal Control Shelter. Our hours are flexible, and each visit makes a difference. If you are ready to get involved, email volunteer@gmhumanesociety.org or 804-693-5520 ext. 116 to discuss opportunities to lend your time and talents in support of our mission.

You can join our foster program. Often, and especially during this time of year, kittens who require bottle feeding or a home to grow and thrive in before adoption enter our care. Kitten fosters save even the tiniest of lives, and we would love to have you join our kitten foster team. All training and supplies needed are provided. Simply email volunteer@gmhumanesociety.org if you would like to join the ranks of our superhero foster volunteers.

Every day at GMHS, homeless pets live because you give. Saving lives is expensive, and there is no shortage of pets in need of our care. Each gift made—tax-deductible, of course—has life-saving power, and we appreciate your commitment to saving and transforming the lives of homeless pets. Donations can be made on the web at gmhumanesociety.org/donate or by mail at P.O. Box 385, Gloucester, Va. 23061. With an 8 percent administrative rate, 92 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to providing shelter and care for homeless pets.

Help GMHS expand our life-saving reach and continue to meet the increased demand for our special brand of programs and services. GMHS maintains life-saving shelter status—with a 96 percent live-release rate—because of your support. Your partnership ensures GMHS never euthanizes for length of stay or space and remains a beacon of hope and safe harbor for homeless pets by adopting, volunteering, fostering or giving.
