Wayne Douglas McDermott, 71, of Hayes, died April 1, 2017 at his home. Wayne was a graduate of Gloucester High School, graduated from VMI in 1967 and received his Master’s several years later. He served his country in the United States Air Force retiring as a Colonel, after 26 years. Wayne worked for A E Com Environmental Corporation for 23 years after his Air Force retirement. He was a professional licensed engineer. Wayne was an active member of Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church and Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church. One of his greatest pleasures was to sit on the porch looking beyond the beach at the ocean and listening to the waves from the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Wayne was known for his honesty, integrity and sense of humor. Whether working, spending time with family and friends, on the golf course or at the beach, Wayne cultivated and nurtured lifelong relationships. He will be missed and never forgotten.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara McDermott; daughter, Kathryn Garnier (Gill); sons, Scott McDermott (Rose) and John McDermott; stepdaughter, Makalia Records (Charles); stepson, Jeremy Gleason; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and sister, JoAnn McDermott Horsley.

Memorial service conducted by the Rev. Garry Livermon will be at 3 p.m. Friday, April 7, 2017, at Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church, Ordinary.
