Warriors hand Lady Dukes first loss

Kecoughtan handed the Gloucester High School varsity softball team its first loss of the season in a 4-1 game Tuesday on the Warriors’ field. The loss leaves the Dukes (14-1) one game ahead of Menchville and two ahead of Kecoughtan.

Gloucester must sweep its upcoming games with Heritage, Woodside and Denbigh to secure the Peninsula District championship and an automatic bid to the Eastern Regional Tournament.

The Dukes took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning with the Warriors when Amber Cook was hit by a pitch and later scored on a single from Makayla Jenkins. The Warriors tied the score in the bottom of the second.

Gloucester loaded the bases with no outs in the third inning but could not push a run across. In the bottom of the third, Kecoughtan scored twice on two hits, an error and a ground out for a 3-1 advantage. The Warriors added a final run in the sixth inning for the 4-1 win.
