Ware Neck shooting suspect ordered to state hospital

A teenager charged with fatally shooting another teen and wounding three other persons on a Ware Neck roadway in January of last year was ordered to Central State Hospital Monday for treatment.

Dijon L. Whitter, 19, of Yorktown was ordered to the state hospital by Judge Jeffrey W. Shaw during a brief hearing Monday in Gloucester Circuit Court. Whitter is charged with second-degree murder and seven other felonies related to the 2016 shootings. 

“Mr. Whitter needs to be restored to competency,” said Gloucester Commonwealth’s Attorney Holly Smith in summing up the findings of Whitter’s two mental health evaluations. 

Whitter’s attorney, Randall L. Leeman Jr., agreed. Leeman said Whitter was not able to assist his counsel at this time but his competency can be restored.
