Ware basketball teams open season

Ware Academy basketball teams opened the season Dec. 10 at Chesapeake Academy. The Ware junior varsity girls scored eight points in the first half, with point guard Callie Penick hitting four, and hung on for the 8-2 win.

The Ware junior varsity boys kept it close but the Ospreys took the lead in the final quarter to win 14-12. Brody Marshall had seven points for Ware and Nicholas Gandee had five.

In a defensive game, Ware varsity’s Grace Sinko-VanLiew put in 10 points while Sienna Rowe and Clara Wood each had four. Led by defenders Cara Moss, Barbara Smith and Adeline Smith, the Waves held back the Ospreys and won, 14-9.

A fast-paced boys’ varsity game saw the Waves with a two-point lead at the half. The team returned to the court on fire and scored 17 more to win, 32-21.
