Wards open Scoot’s BBQ at Gloucester Point

Scoot’s BBQ is a new restaurant at Gloucester Point, but its owners were already well-known for their good food.

Owners Gary and Karen Ward also own Olivia’s in the Village and previously owned a second Olivia’s at Gloucester Point. Olivia’s is named for their daughter, Olivia, a senior at Mathews High School who helps there part-time; Scoot’s is named for Karen’s grandfather, the late R.L. Emerson of Gloucester Point.

Scoot’s, located at the corner of Route 17 and Tidemill Road, serves a mainly different menu than Olivia’s, Gary said, but a few signature dishes from Olivia’s also are offered at Scoot’s such as clam chowder, fish and chips, and crab cakes.

Karen said a barbecue sandwich combo with a choice of one side out of 15 homemade selections offered and a soft drink has been popular. Gary said beef brisket and pork ribs have also sold very well.

Scoot’s staff, led by Chef Todd Hirschberg (who once owned Chef Todd’s restaurant in Mathews), use a large pit smoker to cook the meats, which include pork, beef and turkey. Gary said they burn hickory and oak wood, with varying combinations of the woods used to flavor different meats.

The Wards pride themselves in serving meals with the freshest ingredients. A kids’ menu features macaroni and cheese, chicken tenders and other fun things to eat, Gary said, while children of all ages have been enjoying the homemade desserts such as creamy peanut butter pie.

The couple is buying the building and an adjacent parcel, Gary said, where they plan to add parking and place a few picnic tables for outdoor dining. Scoot’s seats 70 diners.

Olivia’s in the Village seats 110 diners, plus has a few tables in front that seat about a dozen people.

Scoot’s and Olivia’s each employ about 20 full- and part-time workers, Gary said. He manages the Gloucester restaurant, while Karen manages the Gloucester Point location.
