Walter Reed honors its 80+ volunteers

Riverside Walter Reed Hospital held a luncheon to salute its more than 80 volunteers during National Volunteer Week, April 12-18.

“Our volunteers give about 1,000 hours each month,” said Ruth Keane, Human Resources specialist who works with the volunteers. “They make a huge impact in our hospital and our departments count on them.”

James Warren, 75, of Mathews, is one of those making an impact. “I’m at the age where I’ve had a few hospitalizations and I know it’s always nice to hear a friendly voice and see a friendly face.”

Warren retired nearly two years ago and wanted to fill his time “doing for others.” One day, while waiting to have some medical tests completed, he asked hospital officials if there were any volunteer opportunities. He helps in the outpatient surgery recovery room, mostly speaking to patients following their cataract surgeries and bringing them refreshments.
