W. ANNETTE WILBURN

W. Annette Wilburn, age 81, of Hayes, died at Heron Cove, Gloucester, on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022. Annette was a native of Gloucester County, of the Baptist faith, and a graduate of Gloucester High School class of 1959. Following graduation, she began her career in government service at Naval Mine Engineering Facility, Yorktown. Her demonstrated potential resulted in her selection to one of the Command’s first positions under the Equal Employment Upward Mobility Program. She received numerous performance and special act achievement awards. Prior to her retirement in 1974 with 34 years of commitment, her last position which she held for three years was supervisor of the Mine Management Division of the Underwater Mine Program. Annette enjoyed traveling, and visiting many U.S. Navy Commands related to her employment, several of which were overseas. She loved traveling with friends and family in the U.S. and abroad, was an avid gardener, and always had beautiful flowers in her home. Parents, Wilbur L. and Miriam Thornton Wilburn, preceded her in death. She is survived by a brother, Aaron Wilburn and wife Nancy; nephew, Dr. Andrew Wilburn and wife Dr. Maureen Peters of Oberlin, Ohio; niece, Robin Wilburn of Alexandria, Virginia; grand-nieces, and grand-nephews, Patrick and Claire Wilburn of Oberlin, Ohio, Norah, Iris and Grayson Nijbroek of Alexandria, Virginia. A graveside service conducted by Pastor Bill West will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022, at Rosewell Memorial Gardens Cemetery. In memory of our loved one, contributions may be made to a favorite charity of choice. We would like to express a special thank you to the staff at Sanders/Heron Cove 2, and Riverside Hospice for their compassionate care.
