Volunteers sought for Board of Equalization

Gloucester is looking for residents interested in membership on the county’s Board of Equalization, which serves as an appeal board for the county’s real estate assessment.

The duties of the board are to hear taxpayers’ concerns for correction of their real estate assessments; and increase, decrease or affirm such assessments.

The BOE consists of five members, who, upon recommendation by the board of supervisors, are appointed by the Circuit Court. Each member must be a county resident and a majority of the members must own land in the county.

The upcoming vacancy is for a three-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2018, a release stated. Preference will be given to the following professionals: Business owner, attorney or commercial/residential real estate appraiser.
