Volunteers sought for archaeological dig Saturday in Mathews

The Fairfield Foundation, in association with the Mathews County Historical Society, plans to make an archaeological survey of the General Thomas Mathews Inn site in downtown Mathews. 

Volunteers are sought for this hands-on archaeology, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. The site is adjacent to Moughons Hardware on Main Street. Volunteers only need to bring water and their lunch, and all other equipment will be supplied by Fairfield, a release said. No previous archaeological experience is needed, and students are encouraged to participate.

This site was an area of great activity during the late 18th and early 19th century, as well as being the site of a local landmark, the Hotel Mathews, later the General Thomas Mathews Inn. The hotel was demolished in the late 20th century and one of the goals of the archaeological survey is to document the remaining evidence of this once-busy site, the release said.
