Volunteers host health insurance signup at RCC

A group of university students will host a free event on Saturday to help Gloucester residents sign up for health insurance.

The event will take place at Rappahannock Community College, Glenns, from 1 to 4 p.m. The students are part of the William and Mary chapter of “Commonwealth Covered,” a volunteer organization unaffiliated with any insurance companies that mobilizes young people across the state to increase access to health care. The event is also sponsored by Young Invincibles, a national nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth to participate in the movement for affordable health care.

The event comes one day before the Feb. 15 deadline for open enrollment under the Affordable Care Act. Under the law, individuals who forgo health insurance may have to pay a penalty of $325 or 2 percent of income, whichever is higher.
