VMRC upholds decision of Mathews Wetlands Board

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission unanimously voted at its Dec. 13 meeting to uphold the decision of the Mathews County Wetlands Board to approve a shoreline improvement project along the East River.

Tony Watkinson, chief of the Habitat Management Division of VMRC, said Jean Case was authorized to install 436 linear feet of riprap revetment. The VMRC website also shows the commission approved 82 linear feet of sill and 75 linear feet of living shoreline as part of the Case application.

Back in September, the Wetlands Board approved the application, Watkinson said, which was appealed by a number of Mathews property owners who said there was already too much development along the shoreline.

In November, the matter came before VMRC, which referred the case back to the Wetlands Board, which again voted in favor of Case’s request for improvements at the property at 726 Turpin Lane in Port Haywood.
