Visitor’s Center in need of volunteers

A continued shortage of volunteers has forced the Gloucester Visitor’s Center on court green to shut down on Mondays since November, tourism director Hilton Snowdon said Thursday.

Besides having to close on Mondays, Snowdon said, he has been struggling to fill other holes in the schedule, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. And snow and ice this winter shuttered the center on several occasions.

The center being closed on each Monday in March, the most recent month for which statistics are available, and the few days that the center was closed due to the weather, partly explains why only 73 guests were assisted there in March, compared to 177 in that month of 2014.

State certified visitor centers like the one here have to be open at least five days a week, Snowdon said. He hopes that more volunteers will step forward so that the center can go back to daily coverage.
