Visitor spending for Mathews reached $19.2 million in 2024, a 5.9 percent increase over 2023, according to information released recently by the Virginia Tourism Corporation.
This accounts for 70.33 percent of the $27.3 million spent on business sales last year. Visitors also generated $1.3 million in state and local tourism-related taxes, and 7.6 percent of local jobs are sustained by tourism.
According to the VTC, tourism in Virginia generated a record high $35.1 billion in visitor spending in 2024, marking a 5.4 percent increase from $33.3 billion in 2023. Overnight visitation to Virginia increased by over one million people to 44.7 million visitors in 2024, up from 43.6 million in 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic levels for the first time and setting a new record.
