Virtual talk Saturday on Center for Family History

Dr. Shelley Viola Murphy, a genealogist, will lead a virtual meeting of the Middle Peninsula African-American Genealogical and Historical Society at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

The area group will join with the AAHGS-Hampton Roads for her talk, which will provide an introduction to the Center for Family History at the new International African American Museum in Charleston, South Carolina.

The new museum is scheduled to open on Jan. 23, 2023, a release said. Murphy will provide a brief history of the museum along with the historical significance of its location—Gadsden’s Wharf—the site of one of the most prolific slave trading ports in the United States. She will share details of what will be offered at the museum’s Center for Family History as well as information about what individuals can contribute to the Center: USCT pension files, books, collections, and more, the release said.
