Virtual book club

In response to hurricanes that have devastated Texas, Florida and the Caribbean, Lee-Jackson Elementary School teachers have stepped up to help those in need. A Christian radio station announced an outreach program created by a teacher out of Houston, Texas. A virtual book club was created so that others around the world could share the joy of reading with children who lost their homes, schools, and belongings due to Hurricane Harvey.  In an effort spearheaded by school counselor Katie Howlett, several L-J staff members volunteered to be recorded while reading. Music teacher Patrick Billups lent his technology skills by assembling and editing videos of kindergarten teacher Amy Ashberry, third grade teacher Ashley Saunders, librarian Lisa Whaley and second grade teacher Stacie Wiatt (shown reading to her students). After just a few weeks, the virtual book club had over 70,000 members around the world, and plans are being made to create a system of virtual books in order to continue...
