Victoria King’s piece to be performed next month

The Courthouse Community Orchestra will be performing a string quartet piece next month, composed by 2023 Gloucester High School graduate Victoria King. The piece will be played at the Mathews VA250 Committee’s May 15 concert at the Court Green. King is currently a third-year undergraduate at University of North Carolina School of the Arts, majoring in music composition with a minor in creative writing. As part of an opportunity to write for the Balourdet Quartet, she composed “Meanwhile,” a fun, upbeat piece aimed to complement the energy of the ensemble. “I wrote ‘Meanwhile’ while imagining two different, yet simultaneous scenes,” she said. “Both are social gatherings—dances of some sort, celebrating for the same reason, but in vastly different ways.” “One party is refined and elegant, operating within strict rules of etiquette … meanwhile, there is a village dance where people hike up their skirts and dance without thinking.
