The Virginia High School League released its initial 2024 Master Football Schedule last Thursday. The preliminary schedule includes the first season of Mathews High School football following a two-year hiatus.
Mathews
Mathews will return to the gridiron in 2024 with two home games and three away games, beginning the year at home on Thursday, Aug. 29 against John Marshall High School (Richmond). The team will be off for September, returning to action on Oct. 11 at King and Queen. Another away game is scheduled for Oct. 25 at West Point. The team’s second home game will be held on Nov. 1 vs. Charles City. Mathews ends the season on Nov. 8 at Middlesex.
Gloucester
Gloucester, meanwhile, has a full 10-game schedule, facing Kecoughtan (Aug. 29), York (Sept. 6), Hampton (Sept. 13), Denbigh (Sept. 19), Warwick (Sept. 27), Menchville (Oct. 5), Bethel (Oct. 11), Phoebus (Oct. 18), Heritage (Oct. 25) and ending the season against Woodside on Nov. 2.
This initial schedule indicates that all of the Gloucester games would be away games; Gloucester “needs to make the corrections for the home/away games,” said VHSL Director of Communications Mike McCall. GHS Athletic Director Kristy Hunter also indicated that she is aware of the anomaly and has reached out to VHSL to correct it.
The complete initial schedules of all VHSL teams can be found online at www.vhsl.org/football.
