VHSL releases 2021 football schedules

The Gloucester Dukes are set to open the 2021 football season on Aug. 27 at home against Hampton, while the Mathews Blue Devils will be on the road that night facing the Middlesex Chargers, according to master schedules released recently by the Virginia High School League.

Gloucester will continue its homestand the following Thursday, Sept. 2 against York. Remaining regular season games include: (away) Bethel, Kecoughtan, Heritage, Warwick, Phoebus, and (home) Woodside, Denbigh and Menchville.

Mathews, meanwhile, will have its home opener on Sept. 3 against Northampton. The rest of the Blue Devils’ schedule includes: (away) Lancaster, Northumberland, King William, Charles City), and (home) Rappahannock, King and Queen, West Point and a second contest against Middlesex to end the season.

Gloucester will end its regular season on Thursday, Oct. 28 against Phoebus, while the second Middlesex game to cap the season for Mathews is set for Thursday, Nov. 11. All games for both schools have 7 o’clock start times. With the exception of the Nov. 11 finale, all Mathews games are on Friday nights. Gloucester has five Thursday night games (York, Kecoughtan, Heritage, Warwick and Phoebus), with the remainder on Friday.
