VHSL adopts ‘Championships + 1’ schedule; winter sports start Dec. 7

The Virginia High School League Executive Committee, meeting in a special session in Charlottesville on Sept. 17, voted unanimously (33-0-0) to adopt the “Championships + 1” schedule for the FY 2021 Athletic and Academic Activities season.

Earlier, fall sports were put off due to COVID-19 concerns.

The condensed seasons begin with winter sports (Dec. 7-Feb. 20), with the first interscholastic games held on Dec. 21. Winter sports that are part of the VHSL include basketball, gymnastics, indoor track, swimming and diving, and wrestling.

Sports normally associated with the fall season (football, field hockey, volleyball, golf, cross country, golf and competition cheerleading) would have their season Feb. 4-May 1, with the first contest date on March 1.

The abbreviated spring season would run from April 12-June 26, with the first contests on April 26. Spring sports in the VHSL plan are baseball, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, and track and field.
