Veterans programs to be held Friday in Gloucester, Mathews

Veterans organizations in Gloucester and Mathews will commemorate Veterans Day with a pair of services in the two counties Friday.

Middle Peninsula Detachment #1317 of the Marine Corps League is sponsoring an event at 1 p.m. at the Gloucester County Veterans Memorial in front of the new courthouse, while American Legion Post 83, Mathews, will hold its annual dinner and membership awards, beginning at 6 p.m. at the post headquarters in Hudgins.

Gloucester’s ceremony will feature Marine Col. Peter H. Devlin, who heads up the Fleet Antiterrorism Security Teams (FAST) at the Marine Corps Forces Command, Norfolk. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Brian Shearer, chaplain for the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station, will also speak. The Marine Corps is currently in the process of relocating two FAST companies to the Yorktown NWS.
