A Celebration of Life service for Vernon Edward Jenkins, 82, of Hayes, was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the home of his daughter, Barbara Campbell of Hayes. He died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011.

Mr. Jenkins was a member of Union Baptist Church, and graduated from Achilles High School in 1946. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War; worked at Newport News Shipyard, was a waterman, and made crab pots for the watermen before retiring.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Bessie Jenkins; brothers, Herman, Stanley, James, Elwood, Leroy, and Everett; and sisters, Pearl and Jennie.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Dorothy; four daughters, Barbara Campbell, Teresa Haynes, Brenda Jenkins and Lisa Wolak; a sister, Edith Thurman of Norfolk; a grandson, and three step-great-grandchildren.
