VERLYN TURNER WHITE

Verlyn Turner White, 90, died at her home on Oct. 9, 2019 surrounded by her family.

Mrs. White had been a resident of Gloucester County since 1977. She was a graduate of William and Mary College, and a retired educator from Newport News Public School System with 40 years of service. She received her Master’s degree in reading from William and Mary and was a reading specialist. In 1979, Mrs. White was initiated into the international society for key women educators called the Delta Kappa Gamma. She received Teacher of the Year Award in 1991 and was also a lifetime member of the National Education Association. After her retirement she did volunteer work in the Gloucester County Schools.

Mrs. White loved her church and spent most of her adult life as a Sunday School teacher or Sunday School director. She had been a member of Yorktown Baptist, Hermitage Baptist and Newington Baptist Churches. From early childhood she loved poetry and wrote and memorized poetry.

She was a devoted wife for 57 years and a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who will be dearly missed. She was preceded in death by first husband, Haskell White; second husband, William Sullivan, and son, Dennis White.

She is survived by daughter, Debra Lee MacIntosh (Douglas); daughter-in-law, Beverly White; grandchildren, Brian MacIntosh, Laura Brown (Jason Eli Brown), Andrea Adams and Jerry Adams; great-grandchildren, Christian, Ceaser, Kian, Talon, Heaven, Ella, Breanna, Jason, Caleb, Madelyn, Kaitlynn and Dylan.

A Celebration of Life Service conducted by the Rev. Ed Harrow will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019, in the chapel of Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
