VDOT seeks comment on replacement of Burkes Pond Road bridge

The Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking public comment on the proposed replacement of the two-lane bridge on Burkes Pond Road (Route 602) in the James Store area. The project will not impact the nearby dam, according to VDOT spokesperson Kelly Hannon.

Hannon said that VDOT is willing to hold a public hearing about the proposed bridge replacement if residents request one. VDOT wants to replace the bridge because it is "structurally deficient and functionally obsolete," Hannon said. This means that VDOT considers that the 55-foot long bridge, which was built in 1940, does not meet modern bridge design standards and cannot adequately handle modern traffic flow.
