VDOT proposes coordinating traffic signals on Route 17

The Virginia Department of Transportation has proposed a plan to upgrade and coordinate traffic signals along Route 17 from Gloucester Court House to Tidemill Road.

Kelly Hannon, a VDOT spokesman, said that any person can request a public hearing be held on the plan. To request a hearing, send a written request to Daniel Harrison, Project Manager, VSDOT, 87 Deacon Road, Fredericksburg, Va. 22405 or e-mail Daniel.Harrison@VDOT.Virginia.gov by Dec. 3.

VDOT wants to reduce congestion along Gloucester’s Route 17, which is also known as George Washington Memorial Highway. By changing the current signals, she said, VDOT hopes to maximize traffic flow.

To accomplish that, VDOT has budgeted $2.2 million for the signalization improvement project. Hannon said that video equipment installed at many intersections can help move traffic more smoothly.

The signals can be adjusted by traffic volume, time of day including rush hour patterns, and by other means, she said.
