VDOT plans changes to Route 17 crossovers

The Virginia Department of Transportation announced Monday that it plans to upgrade one crossover on Route 17 at Hayes and close two others located nearby.

Kelly Hannon, a VDOT spokesman based in Fredericksburg, said the plan is to construct north- and southbound turn lanes at the crossover in the vicinity of Jackson & Associates on Route 17, which is located near Crewe Road.

Construction is to begin this summer and should be completed within about one month once the project begins, Hannon said.

The project will cost $790,000, Hannon said, which is being paid for with federal stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Besides improving that crossover, the work will include the closure of two other crossovers on Route 17 near Crewe Road. One crossover is in the area Rick’s Upholstery, she said, and the other is next to the West Law Office building.
