It was a busy final week of 2021 for the Mathews High School boys’ basketball team, with games against Northumberland, West Point and a pair of contests against Essex. The varsity team scored its first win of the season, in a 65-55 overtime thriller last Thursday against Northumberland. Unfortunately, that was the highlight of the week, as the Devils dropped its other three games to fall to 1-6 on the season. The junior varsity team also picked up its first season victory, beating Essex in Saturday’s home game, 35-26. The JV squad lost to Northumberland, West Point and in Monday’s rematch with the Trojans to drop to 1-6 as well.Varsity Devils Junior Tae Legette scored an impressive 27 points in last Thursday’s varsity game against the Indians to lead Mathews to the overtime victory. “It felt great to see my team fight for a win,” head coach Curtis Williamson said after the victory.
