Varsity Devils pick up momentum

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team posted a 3-1 record in the past week and a half, improving its overall record to 6-5. After a slow start, the Devils have won five of the past six and are rolling as they head into conference play.

The Devils traveled April 14 to King William to face off with the Tidewater District rival Cavaliers. The game was similar to last year’s, a classic pitchers’ duel. The game went quickly and quietly through the first four innings. The Devils drew first blood in the top of the fifth when Zack Jarosz drew a walk, stole second, and came into score on a base hit by Jalen Matthews. The host Cavaliers fought back with two of their own in the bottom of the frame, pulling ahead into the sixth inning. The Devils showed some fight of their own as Cody Tunstall, Marshall Barrack, and Payton Blake strung hits together in order to score Tunstall and Barrack in the top of the sixth.
