Varsity Devils go 2-1 in recent action

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team went 2-1 in the busy week before Christmas break, while the junior varsity Devils went 1-2 in contests against West Point, Washington and Lee and Middlesex.

The varsity Devils earned victories over the Pointers (62-60) and Chargers (71-60), while falling to the Eagles (72-53). The JV squad’s lone victory was over West Point (50-48).

West Point

Mathews traveled to West Point on Friday and staged a close battle between two Tidewater District foes, with the score tied 29-29 after three quarters. With about four minutes left on the clock, the Pointers took a six-point lead. However, the Blue Devils stepped up on the defensive end, and worked their way back into the game. The game was tied with only six seconds remaining as Caleb Thomas earned a steal under the basket and made the winning layup with time expiring.
